Week 1 (Jan 9 - 15)

Introduction

  1. Getting to know each other and the computer lab equipment.
  2. Check the web site and get familiar with all the content contained on each page. Remember that you will need to read this page to know which are the tasks for each week of this course.
  3. Discuss the evaluation plan with teacher and classmates.
  4. Register in the Becoming a Webhead Yahoo Group.
  5. Get familiar with the setting of the Yahoo Group.
  6. Check out the Web site of the BaW session.
  7. Complete the exploratory survey
  8. Register in Moodle (our course communication center). See Moodle tutorial
  9. Complete your profile in Moodle
  10. Go to the Forum: "My expectations" (week 1) and write the reasons you had to join this course, what you would like to learn and any obstacles you think you might encounter.
  11. Share your reflections with the class.
  12. Read the article: Warschauer, M. (1996). Computer-assisted language learning: An introduction
  13. Discuss article with classmates
  14. Go to the Wiki: "My reflections", and write your ideas about this first session.
  15. Before our next class, take the time to check the week 1 activities for the BaW session. If you have questions, post them to the Question and Answers Forum in Moodle. They will be answered by your teacher or by any of your classmates who can answer your question or doubt. We are here to learn together :-)
  16. Select 1 reading from BaW session week 1, and jot down your comments on the BaW-06 Forum

Week 2 (Jan 16 - 22)

Asynchronous communication modes

  1. Share impressions about the BaW session and the reading you selected
  2. Reply to a comment made by another participant of the BaW-06 forum
  3. Complete the BaW week 1 activities (if you have not done so)
  4. Get in pairs and discuss the following topics
    a. What advantages/disadvantages do you see in the use of a forum for language learning?
    b. How different are forums and distributions lists?
    c. Is there a difference between e-mail and distributions lists?
    d. Which one(s) would you prefer for your teaching context, and why.
    e. How different are the forums in Moodle from the BaW forum?
    f. What difference(s) do you perceive between Moodle and Yahoo Groups?
  5. Share your comments with the whole class.
  6. Go to the BaW YG and select two introductions posted by other participants (not in this class) and reply to them.
  7. For next session each one of you will select two readings (week 2 Baw), and write 3 -4 questions about each of them. Post your questions to the Moodle forum: "Questions about readings". Name the thread with the name of the reading, and then add your questions to the reading and the link to the page where the reading can be found.
  8. Don't forget that on Saturday 21, at 9:00 am (13:00 GMT) there will be a Tour to Tapped In guided by B.J. Berquist. Be sure to be there before the time, and log in as guest or register to become a member (it is free). Your computer should have Java Web Start in order to be able to get access to the place. We are usually there at noon GMT (8:00 am). If time allows, we will get there in this session.

Week 3 (Jan 23 - 29)

Text and Voice synchronous communication tools

  1. Discuss the session at Tapped In. What you liked and disliked.
  2. Open Yahoo Messenger. Add your classmates' Yahoo ID's to your buddy list. With your teacher and classmates (in a conference window where you will be invited by your teacher ) learn about all the features in Yahoo Messenger.
  3. Open a new conference and invite a classmate who has read at least one of the readings you selected. Take turns to share your questions and discuss them. Make sure to save the chat.
  4. Post your chat to the Forum "chatlog week 3". You can post it as an attachment if you saved it as Word document, or just copy and paste.
  5. Read the chatlog and reflect about:
    a. the experience of using text chat to discuss a topic
    b. la coherencia del discurso en el chat
    c. would it have been different if there had been more than 3 people? How about if you had used voice instead of text?
  6. Go to the BaW YG, and send a message with something you would like to share or ask, or simply reply to two posts sent by other participants. Try to answer the questions for the week.
  7. Don't forget that Michael Coghlan will be at Yahoo Messenger on ...., , at .... GMT, for a chat on the use of voice communication tools. In case you cannot attend, talk to me to have a voice session at YM any other time during the week.
  8. Visit the BaW blog and post your reflections.

Week 4 (Jan. 30 -Feb. 5)

Building an online presence: Blogs, Wikies and Web pages

  1. Attend session on blogs and podcasting at the Alado room (8:30 - 10:00 GMT)
  2. Creation of blogs at blogspot (creation - adding links - adding images)
  3. Creation of a Web page using Front Page - Uploading Web page to server (Geocities).
  4. Do week 3 BaW-06 activities
  5. Updating your wiki page in Moodle (reflections) - Internal links

  1. Discussion about e-teaching. Is it different from f2f teaching? Check out this Web site of a presentation given by Arnold Mühren about "The art of e-teaching"
  2. Position essay: Post your reflections to your wiki page, in Moodle, about:
    • Artists are special people with special skills that not everybody possesses." "Does it mean that e-learning is not for everybody? What are those skills teachers and learner should have? Are they teachable? If so, How can we get teachers to master these skills?
    • "What should be the role of a moderator/tutor? Is there a difference between those two terms?"
    • What's the place of Communities of Practice in Professional development (teacher education in our case).
