Title –Subject/Verb Agreement

Using Is and Are

Grade and Developmental Level: 4th Grade Language Arts (Grammar/Using is, are was, were))

 .Objective (s):

· Students will be able to identify what verb should be placed with what subject (singular subject-  plural verb; Plural subject singular verb)
· Students will be able to identify and use the correct subject verb agreement in sentences

Procedures:
· Focus:
The teacher will explain that when the subject (the who in a sentences ) is plural (more than one person, ,place or thing), then the subject and verb should be s +p (singular plus plural) .  Pictures will be used to show one and more than one item.  Many examples and sentences will be given.

Input:
The teacher will give the subject and ask students for a verb to match the subject. After several examples (each student answering five examples, the teacher will give each students a sentence.  The verb will be placed in the sentence incorrectly for correction by  the students.

Modeling:
The teacher will write several examples on the board of the correct subject and verb agreement and the incorrect subject and verb agreement.

Check for Understanding:
The teacher will give the students sentences in which they must identify the verb usage.

Guided Practice:
The teacher will then pass out small white erase boards to each class member. The teacher will direct students to pay attention to the underline verb in the sentences.  The students will be asked to underline the verb that goes with the subject in each sentence.  Each student will share responses.  This process will be repeated as many times as the teacher feels necessary. Students will write neatly on the white erase boards and listen to directions carefully during this portion of the lesson. The teacher will direct two students to collect the white erase boards at the end of this activity.

Closure:
