NellieD joined the room.
TeresaD: hi, nellie!
DafneG: Tere, I have just received a message that my article about
my English for Architecture and Urban planning blended courses will
be published in the Dec 06 issue of Essential Teacher
DafneG waves hi to Nellie
StevenJ joined the room.
TeresaD: congrats, daf!!!
RonGr: congratulations
NellieD: Hi Teresa, small world, isn't it? How are you?
TeresaD: hi, steven!
DouglasWC: kudos!
DafneG waves hi to Steven
StevenJ: Hi everyone!
DafneG: thanks
NellieD: Kudos to you, too.
TeresaD: so we have doug, ro and steven so far. let's see if any
of the girls show up! ;-)
NellieD: Do any of you use Talking Communities?
DafneG: I knew it was going to be published because they asked
for it, but I did not know when
TeresaD: carla got her GMTs all mixed up last saturday
DafneG: Steven was confused too, but I was lucky to find him online
at YM half an hour before our chat
StevenJ: he's still confused
DafneG: lol, Steven
TeresaD: it can be confusing at first. and not everyone knows about
The World Clock page, which is a great help
StevenJ: i just figure, its 11 in venezuela, and thats 10 here
DafneG: Nellie, we use Alado
TeresaD: and 4 pm in portugal, steven!
StevenJ: but is there a way by looking at the world clock
DafneG: right, Steven :-)
NellieD left the room.
TeresaD: sure, steven. let me get the URL
StevenJ: no teresa, dafne gave it to me
TeresaD: ok
StevenJ: thanks....but
TeresaD: no thanks ;-)
StevenJ: i dont understand how i calculate mexio in relation to
the gmt
StevenJ: i mean i can see the time in every city of the world
RonGr: Arizona is 7 hrs earlier than GMT; Sonora at least is probably
the same or close
TeresaD: you look up the city nearest you and then see wht time
it is in GMT (bottom of the oage) and calculate the difference.
does this make sense?!
Maggi joined the room.
EmilyW joined the room.
TeresaD hugs maggi
DafneG hugs Maggi
StevenJ: actually, i think im getting bogged down
DafneG: hi Emily
Maggi hugs tere and Daf
EmilyW: Hi

TeresaD: bogged down by ???
CatlinH joined the room.
TeresaD: hi, catlin!
DafneG: I think Sus created a tutorial for the world clock, didn't
she, Tere?
StevenJ: im -5, ill just let it go at that
DafneG Waves hi to Catlin
TeresaD: she did. let me see if i can find it, daf
CatlinH: Hi! I'm glad I found you all
EmilyW left the room.
DafneG: right, Steven,
TeresaD: http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/baw/world-clock.html
DafneG: yes, Catlin, you are here with us :-)
StevenJ: thanks teresa
TeresaD: nothing better than the TI reception to find someone
DafneG: at any time
TeresaD: right
CatlinH: It's past my bedtime, but this is very interesting. What
have people used Tapped In for?
DafneG: you can look at the TI calendar to learn about all the
workshops that take place daily here at TI
DafneG: it is under the "welcome to Tapped In" column
above the chat area
TeresaD: tons of things, catlin. a lot of PD sessions, presentations,
meetings with students, etc. the calendar is the best way to find
out. always sth going on every day
DafneG: http://snipurl.com/GuestCalendar
TeresaD: catlin, what time is it where you are? whers is it exactly?
i forgot :-(
Maggi: your time zone is wrong Catlin
CatlinH: I was just looking at the Guest Calendar.... it's midnight
here in Japan.
TeresaD: today we can meet at my office. i'll go there first and
then all you have to do is select my name on the Online tab (left)
and click the litlle door icon below it. is that ok with everyone
in PP 104?
Maggi: you have the PST default
DafneG: fine, Tere
StevenJ: lead the way
TeresaD: i see, catlin. yes, it's late
TeresaD: ok, i'll lead the way
CatlinH: OK

TeresaD: or... the best place!
CatlinH joined the room.
DafneG: welcome, Catlin
TeresaD: welcome catlin!
TeresaD: catlin, did you have time to look at the TI calendar?
CatlinH: yeah! I found you!
TeresaD: great!!!
TeresaD: and later you need to get your office, catlin.
DafneG: thanks for the welcome message on your whiteboard, Tere
:-)
CatlinH: Yes, I looked at the calendar. The Tips and Tricks is
advice about using Tapped In?
TeresaD: welcome! :-)
CarlaA joined the room.
DafneG: right, Catlin
StevenJ: I just saw that...it´s nice a nice touch
DafneG waves hi to Carla!
TeresaD: and there are tours
CarlaA: hi!
TeresaD: welcome, carla!
CarlaA: today I could figure out the right time
TeresaD: you got the time right. yes!
DafneG: great!
DouglasWC: Group 2 present and accounted for!
TeresaD: glad you like the welcome message, steven
TeresaD: right, doug!
StevenJ: is it possible to go into someones office without them
being there?
DafneG: lol, doug. I have put a "here" check next to
your names ;-)
TeresaD: if you want a bigger chat window, click Actions above
and Detach
DafneG: yes, Steven
TeresaD: yes, steven. unless it's locked
DafneG: you click on the Tappen In tab, on top of the screen..
StevenJ: i sound sort of nosy dont i?
DafneG: and or go to search
TeresaD: and remember that you can also change the Font size
DafneG: better search
DafneG: and write the name of the person you are looking for
StevenJ: ok
DafneG: you will get a page with a link to his/her office
StevenJ: cool
TeresaD: this is a great environment, steven.
DafneG: some people lock their offices, though
DafneG: We do not!
TeresaD: much more versatile than when we started her 4 years ago
CarlaA: as i mentioned in the discussion about tapped in, in the
past i registered, but didn't have a chance to check it out, so
i found it confusing, but now I see it as a very nice tool!
CatlinH: Have any of you used Tapped In with students?
TeresaD: i don't have any jewelry here, so i don't lock it ;-)
StevenJ: i feel like ive been living in a cave
DafneG: there is a Webheads in Action group here, at TI
TeresaD: lol, steven
DafneG: you can find info about Webheads there, and you can join
the group
DafneG: that was my feeling 4 years ago, too, Steven
TeresaD: i've had meetings with students of other colleagues here,
catlin
CarlaA: i found the webheads here, and that's where I could find
the info to join the online seminar in november
StevenJ: what a relief
DafneG: I was completely Web-illiterate
TeresaD: we've all been there, steven. what a great change when
we start gettingreally involved in cyberspace, isn't it?
CarlaA: steven, I think everybody has, at some point, felt jurassic!!!
I still have this feeling...
TeresaD: i wasn't, but the webheads have opened up so many different
horizons and friendships
StevenJ: carla the site you linked is phenomenal
CarlaA: which one?
StevenJ: it´s one for the school
StevenJ: but it has so many interesting areas to explore
TeresaD: i'm already compiling the sites we've been suggesting
plus all those in the course. i'll have the page up very soon and
will update it regulalrly
CarlaA: oh, we've been working on it for 3 years non-stop. That's
my job.
StevenJ: well congratulations!
TeresaD: i keep several pages and it isn't always easy. but it's
worthwhile
StevenJ: it´s really impressive
DafneG: we will also post to the course Web page the tables you
come up with in
TeresaD: carla, i second steve
CarlaA: A friend of mine and I have fewer groups and most of our
times we are in front of the computer looking for pedagogical materials
to feed the site
TeresaD: we'll have a small website by the time we're finished
CatlinH: It would be great to have that list of sites. We've been
introduced to so much in this course, there isn't time to explore
it all right now.
TeresaD: we've always done that, catlin. by topics to make it easier
DafneG: Teresa compiles all the pages to interesting sites listed
by Webheads in our distribution list
CarlaA: that's greta, teresa. I've been compiling all the sites
since the first module. Then, I can send you the link to my bookmarks.
It' s open to anyone.
TeresaD: and i also compile all the pages by webheads
TeresaD: ok, carla. my pages are all public
DafneG: we also keep track of all our f2f encounters :-)
TeresaD: that's really fun and special, daf
DafneG: we have even met the children of some of our Webheads colleagues
TeresaD: true. i've met two of them.
DafneG: I have met one, JM's daughter, and i don't know him f2f
CarlaA: now i'm trying to start a collaborative project with a
group of one of the webheads and mine.
TeresaD: the webheads are a very special community. you should
all consider joining us
StevenJ: Dafne, did you make your pages for your course?
DafneG: yes, Steven, I create all my pages
StevenJ: did you take special courses for design?
TeresaD: me too. and all my presentations. i love doing that
DafneG: not at all
DafneG: I have learned everything on my own with the scaffolding
of webheads colleagues
StevenJ: I get real hung-up on the appearance, some sites really
are easy on the eyes
StevenJ: I noticed that with the sites my group was assigned
DafneG: someone mentioned Isabel's site
StevenJ: me
TeresaD: i have always been faithful to the KISS principle with
my pages
DafneG: she has been our guest speaker for 2 years
TeresaD: she does great work
DafneG: in the Becoming a WEbhead session
StevenJ: oh my gosh, I loved her site
DafneG: yes, it is very useful and well done
TeresaD: and it's full of great materials, isn't it, steven?
StevenJ: it is, i didn't get anywhere near through it, but what
i saw was really useful
DafneG: We are planning to invite her again for our Jan. 2006 session
CatlinH: what site is that?
StevenJ: http://www.isabelperez.com
CatlinH: thanks!
StevenJ: no problem!
TeresaD: full of great goodies, catlin
DafneG: you were faster than me, Steven ;-)
StevenJ: i REALLY liked that one
TeresaD: he's getting the hang of things, daf!
StevenJ: i have it tattood on my arm
TeresaD: and fast
TeresaD: lol
DafneG: right!
TeresaD: here's a presentation i did for daf's students last june.
it has a very simple layout, but they loved it. there are photo
pages and also a photo story
TeresaD: http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/bridges/vgamab_pr.htm
TeresaD: see if you like it
TeresaD: later, i mean
StevenJ: quick question
TeresaD: well, i think we've had some very interesting threads
and discussions this week, as some of you have commented
TeresaD: yes
StevenJ: how do i copy these links ?
DafneG: you can see here all the guests I had last trimester: http://dafnegonzalez.com/id3125-05/content/guests.html
StevenJ: from this chat?
TeresaD: when you get the chat log
DafneG: they will get to your email on the chatlog
TeresaD: it's much easier
StevenJ: oh that´s right, sorry
DafneG: you can also click on them and then bookmark them
TeresaD: and we'll also post the chat log in our website with all
the links
RonGr: It's confusing; they're blue here, so it looks like you
can link directly but you can't.
DafneG: yes, you can, Ron
StevenJ: thats my problem
RonGr: how?
StevenJ: ive tried, they dont open
DafneG: unless you have a popup blocker
RonGr aaah!
TeresaD: you can if you click the CTRL key, ron
CatlinH: I've been clicking on all of them, it's great!
StevenJ: That is so cool
StevenJ: the control key temporarily deactivates my popup blocker
RonGr: I guess I have to disable the popup blocker first
DafneG: that's the way we give presentations here, using webpages
to show our stuff
RonGr: It didn't disable mine.
RonGr: Mine's better.
RonGr: less disableable
DafneG: lol, Ron
CarlaA: I just checked your page, Teresa. Neat! Maybe I'l l have
to send pictures of our recently inaugurated bridge, JK Bridge
TeresaD: thanks, catlin
DafneG: yes, Carla, do! please
TeresaD: when you have the chance, look at the photo story. the
link is in slide 2
DafneG: on the page I sent you can see all the bridges that were
presented to my students
CarlaA: daf, I think you can do great things with the pictures
of Brasilia that I have
DafneG: in fact, I have a unit on Brasilia :-)
CarlaA: fantastic!!! I'll send you the pictures
DafneG: I would love to have those pics, yessss
CarlaA: and with no copyright problems!!!
DafneG: and I can invite you to talk to my students
TeresaD: i also have pics of when i was in brasilia in 1980, daf
CarlaA: of course
DafneG: great!
CarlaA: daf, the monuments are the same, but the city has become
much bigger
DafneG: that's what i have heard, Carla, never been there
DafneG: I have only visited the cities next to our border
StevenJ: Dafne, what do you do, have a session via webcam or ?
DafneG: we use Alado or the Elluminate room at LT, and some webcaming
too
TeresaD: we have sessions at vClasses, virtual classrooms, steven
CarlaA: i'm doing a project on stereotypes with one of my groups
that will include the contrasts in brasilia. rich, poor, beautiful,
not so nice to the eyes, etc... When it is ready, I'll send it to
you
TeresaD: we could arrange to have one of our chat at alado, daf.
would you all like that?
StevenJ: i would love to observe something like that, i really
can't imagine it
DafneG: that would be wonderful, Carla
DafneG: you speak Spanish, Steven, right?
StevenJ: yes
DafneG: if so, you are invited to speak to my graduate students
DafneG: good
CarlaA: are these spaces free?
TeresaD: for the webheads,<carla
DafneG: you can tell them your about your experience getting acquainted
with the online world
TeresaD: we have a room in each of them
DafneG: if you join webheads, you can have access to these rooms
StevenJ: interesting but my palms already started to sweat
DafneG: I will coach you
CarlaA: so i'll have to join you! DEFINITELY!
StevenJ: ill take you up on that
DafneG: sure!!
TeresaD: yesterday rita, an argentinian wbhead and friend, gave
a pres. from a conference through elluminate
DafneG: Tere and I have also webcasted some of our presentations
to webheads
TeresaD: six of us were all over the world listening in and participating
with her and her audience. it was great!
CarlaA: i attended one in TESOL, a fantastic one, that I could
watch again in Learning Times. And I always listen to the online
talks they have.
TeresaD: they have fabulous archives, carla
TeresaD: there's no stopping once we get hooked on this! the problem
is finding time for everything we'd like to do
CarlaA: Steven, you should register there. There are three guys
that discuss CALL every week and they give wonderful ideas
DafneG: What a better way to expose our students to actual vocabulary
and grammar than synchronous events?
TeresaD: absolutely, daf
StevenJ left the room (signed off).
TeresaD: where did steven go??!! ;-)
StevenJ joined the room.
TeresaD: wb
DafneG: wb, Steven
CarlaA: how do you work with vocabulary and grammar in synchronous
events?
StevenJ: thanks, i have no idea what happened, i thought i offended
someone..jeje
RonGr: don't ask personal questions; he'll say where he went if
he wants to
DafneG: exposure to the language, Carla
DafneG: lol, Ron
CarlaA: lol, ron
DafneG: but you can do different activities
DafneG: like role plays
CarlaA: like?
DafneG: photo descriptions
DafneG: simple interviews
CarlaA: this is a great one
DafneG: dictations
DafneG: I have done dictations in Skype
CarlaA: How about attendance? Do all students join?
DafneG: my students join from the computer lab, from home, cyber
cafes, or wherever
DafneG: I don't take attendance as such
DafneG: students have a whole week to complete their assignments
DafneG: but I am talking of adults (19 -22)
DafneG: I open a YM conference and invite all who are online
CarlaA: my question is like one you set a time after school to
do it. Do all of them join the chat, conference? Are they assessed
for that?
DafneG: in that way we keep in touch in case there are questions
or I have things to communicate to them
CarlaA: yeah, I've been trying that
CarlaA: even settin a time for online grammar help
TeresaD: have you been successful, cala?
DafneG: I use alternative evaluation,
TeresaD: carla
DafneG: that's great, Carala
DafneG: Carla
DafneG: he he
CarlaA: well, Teresa, I've just started
CarlaA: But the ones who joined loved it
DafneG: if working in a chat, students need to post their chatlogs
TeresaD: don't give up if they don't respons initially. keep on
trying, carla
RonGr: gotta go--bye all
RonGr left the room (signed off).
StevenJ: bye ron
TeresaD: bye, ron. see you!
DafneG: they select their best work and post it to an e-portfolio
StevenJ: wow....he´s fast
TeresaD: lol
StevenJ: i have a question, but its about group work
CarlaA: how do they organize their e-portfolios? What kind of material
do they include?
DafneG: shoot
StevenJ: well, maybe later is better?
DafneG: depends on the course, Carla,
CarlaA: no that's ok, steven
StevenJ: i dont mean to derail the conversation
DafneG: you can check the assessment pages on my courses
CarlaA: no problem
TeresaD: we're open to diff. topics, steven
StevenJ: well, i understand why group work is important, and useful
DafneG: yes
StevenJ: but in reality, i dont see it working all the time
StevenJ: and for me I love to work in a group
CarlaA: i think it depends on the people who are involved
DafneG: it has to be very well planned, Steven
StevenJ: but schedules and all that...
TeresaD: but not everybody likes to work in a group
TeresaD: sometimes it's the mix of people that may not be good
DafneG: there will be a chapter on a book to appear in March where
I talk about group work
StevenJ: i know but how do you handle that
DafneG: I think that the task is fundamental
DafneG: my favorite technique is jigsaw
TeresaD: i was going to say that, daf. task and group members are
both important
CarlaA: this time, I think the three of us are working well. but
in one course we were three, and just two did all the work, even
if the instructor tried to set the tasks!
StevenJ: im puzzled
DafneG: where each student has a piece of information not known
by the others
TeresaD: if the task keeps them involved, i think that's part of
the success
StevenJ: ah ok
DafneG: and the product they have to come up with needs all those
pieces of info
DafneG: so they have to communicate and share their info
StevenJ: but for example when you have groups with very diverse
skills sets
TeresaD: it's sort of what happens in a webquest, daf
DafneG: so they have to negotiate meaning
StevenJ: ok, i see
CarlaA: i've attended a workshop that they had jigsaw reading here
in TApped in
DafneG: I am going to present on the WiAOC about a conversation
analysis I did to 30 chatlogs where students were doing this type
of work
CarlaA: i don' t know how you find time for all that, daf!
CatlinH: I'm afraid I've got to go- now that Steven has derailed
the conversation -just kidding. I'll read the chatlog to get the
rest
StevenJ: bye catlin...sorry!
DafneG: well, I ask myself the same question, Carla ;-)
TeresaD: ok, catlin. thanks for being here
DafneG: thanks, Catlin, see you online
CarlaA: Catlin, I'll post my grammar link today
CatlinH left the room (signed off).
DafneG: I love doing group work, and now I prefer when it is done
online
StevenJ: I like it too, but ....
DafneG: there are very good articles on cooperative learning, Steven
StevenJ: i feel its best when people form their own groups, after
getting to know each other...the only problem is there`s no time
for that
StevenJ: I´ve been reading some
StevenJ: I really feel like I need an internship
TeresaD: steven, with our students it's a trial and error process
at the beginning. then we start getting the hang of it
DafneG: Kagan has some books with practical stuff
TeresaD: we learn from mistakes as we go along
DafneG: right, Tere
StevenJ: and also
StevenJ: what works for some, wont work for others
StevenJ: i had a great group experience in an online class
DafneG: I used to give teacher training on Cooperative Learning
StevenJ: and the group was assigned, but it worked great
TeresaD: i love to experiment, esp. with young kids. and they love
challenges
StevenJ: this week i feel like i didn't succeed at it
CarlaA: in my case it didn't
DafneG: well, sometimes the conditions are not the best one for
the different members of a group
StevenJ: i know, and neither teacher nor students can control everything
TeresaD: if the group members aren't in synch, it's hard to makes
things work, steven. on or offline
StevenJ: true
CarlaA: in this class the three of us are communicating to accomplish
the task.
TeresaD: daf and i are always 'in synch'. it's amazing. we makes
the same comments at the same time, and then laugh about the exact
timing
DafneG: Tere and I are so used to working together, that we don't
even need to talk to know what we should do or say
DafneG: he he
TeresaD: see what we mean?
StevenJ: isn´t that great...
DafneG: lol
TeresaD: it is, steven. and it makes things so much easier and
much more pleasant
DafneG . o O ( and she is not sitting next to me )
TeresaD: right
StevenJ: lol
StevenJ: i have another question
TeresaD: go ahead, steven
StevenJ: how do you deal with different levels of the participants
StevenJ: its very hard
TeresaD: we try to be there for each and everyone, steven
StevenJ: Personally, i realize I´m light years behind most
in these courses
StevenJ: but I feel like i´m learning a lot
DafneG: in my architecture courses it is the most wonderful thing,
they have different levels in English and in their knowledge about
arch. In this way they learn from and with each other
StevenJ: but do the more advanced get bored?
StevenJ: if the student has the right attitude, they can learn
in almost any situation
DafneG: not in my courses, because I teach content-based, not grammar
based
TeresaD: i agree 100%, steven. attitude is basic in any course
or classroom
DafneG: english is the means of communication but their tasks are
about arch.
TeresaD: besides, students in general like to help one another
DafneG: right, Tere and Steven
StevenJ: do you students know each other from other years?
DafneG: some yes, but usually not, because they study different
trimesters of their career
StevenJ: ah ok
DafneG: they can take the English courses any time after they complete
their second year in their studies
StevenJ: How is the level in Venezuela, if you can generalize?
CarlaA: guys, sorry to interrupt, but if I wanted to have a private
chat with Doug, what should I do? It's nothing pornographic! Don'
t take me wrong, it is just that We need to finish our group work!
DafneG: all levels, depending on the school they come from and
their attitude towards the language
DafneG: lol, Carla
TeresaD: lol, carla ;-)
DafneG: you can go, Carla
StevenJ: I live in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, and really
it's amazing to me what passes for bilingual education. I have friends
from Colombia who never have been in an English speaking country,
yet they speak with native fluency and accent.
DafneG: you have permission to do whatever you are pleased with
;-)
TeresaD: select his name and click the little icon on the left
with the face
DafneG: you need to click on the "online" tab first,
Carla
CarlaA: Ok. I got it!
DafneG: brb phone
StevenJ: Teresa can I ask a question re: the chart?
TeresaD: sure, steven
StevenJ: how do i use it?
StevenJ: i understan the parts, but to copy it, or make one similar?
TeresaD: you can copy-paste to word in your computer and carry
on from there
StevenJ: ah ok, so its easy
StevenJ: thanks
StevenJ: teresa do you know of any program
TeresaD: that's how i would do it. and that's what we do to put
up all your final charts in th course website
StevenJ: that hooks up teachers and schools for a sort of internship?
StevenJ: i have a friend who teaches in the states
TeresaD: i don't, steven :-(
StevenJ: and she has had Japanese teachers come and work with her
StevenJ: ok
StevenJ: i really think i need to get connected to and learn from
a successful teacher
TeresaD: just a sec. TESOL probably does that
TeresaD: do you mean online?
StevenJ: well, actually id like to be there, and see a teacher
who uses online and f2f
StevenJ: I came into teaching through the back door
TeresaD: i'd contact TESOL. do you belong to it?
StevenJ: yes
StevenJ: I have tried to learn but there is so much that i'm missing
TeresaD: ok. let me see if i remember any other assoc. or group
StevenJ: that´s ok, ill investigate a bit. Maybe i can contact
a school and volunteer
TeresaD: that's one possiblity. or apply to some internship at
a local school. would that be possible?
StevenJ: Do you know anyone in Mexico who is doing really good
work in teaching English with an online component?
StevenJ: Well, I really am in the jungle.
TeresaD: i think JoAnn Miller is. let me find her website
StevenJ: now, Cancun is near, in fact my mailing address is there,
but there is a real problem with quality.
StevenJ: Well anyway, this course has really made me think.
TeresaD: i'm glad. :-)
TeresaD: i'll try to find joann's site and send it to you
StevenJ: thanks
StevenJ: Are your kids fluent in English?
TeresaD: so, so by the end of the second year. i have absolute
beginners this year.
TeresaD: of course, the good students are much more fluent
StevenJ: do you enjoy the absolute beginners?
TeresaD: let me give you an example. just a sec
StevenJ: ok
TeresaD: i do, bec. i can see the difference my work brings about
StevenJ: also , no bad habits
StevenJ: clean slate , so to speak
TeresaD: yes, that's right
TeresaD: http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/fwe5-jun05.htm
DafneG: sorry, was solving a family prob
StevenJ: thank you so much!
TeresaD: scroll down to 21jun and see the video message. rodrigo
StevenJ: ok...thanks...
TeresaD: he's an A student and an enthusiast of everything we did
StevenJ: how many people are in your groups?
TeresaD: 28 at the most. but thisyear i have two groups of 20!
:-)
StevenJ: nice
StevenJ: my groups are real small...thankfully
StevenJ: i have so many
StevenJ: maximum of 8
TeresaD: however, i've been able to achieve much more so far with
the class of 28
DafneG: that's a great number, Steven
