The Tower of English

Provides 300 websites in 34 categories.

20 vocabulary sites include serious (assessment), silly (made up words), and useful (those creating immediate dictionary support for any text).

8 grammar sites combined supply a little of everything: assessment, explanation with practices, sometimes a quiz or activity. However, some links did not work.

Levels not indicated in descriptions but most seem Intermediate-Advanced

Explanations for the sites are clear. I liked the suggestions (Your Turn) given to learners for what they could do while or after using the site.

Vocabulary and Grammar

E.L. Easton

This comprehensive website is for learners and teachers of languages. Under the tab, labeled English, there are several useful subcategories.

In the section of vocabulary websites are word lists, quizzes (e.g. idioms, slang, dictionary skills, and categories of words), online machine translators, and varieties of English.

In the grammar section websites are explanations, exercises, and quizzes on various grammar points listed by topic, also handbooks.

English Quizzes for ESL Students

Vocabulary is one of three sections. The other two are Playing With Words (grammatical categories—"adjectives, nouns, verbs, prepositions, and everything else") and Surf the Web ("external links to dozens of sites"). One subsection ("In Sickness and in Health") focuses on health-related sites.)

Vocabulary is divided into four subsections: people, animals, house and garden, and it’s a small world.

Grammar exercise topics include nouns, adjectives, prepositions, verbs, and interrogatives.

Exercise formats include matching ("drag and drop"), fill in the blanks, and crossword puzzles.

Vocabulary

English: Vocabulary Guide | Vocabulary Guide: English

This site from Language Guide.Org features a large collection of pictures and vocabulary items. When students drag their cursors over a picture, they hear the term pronounced (in American English in the ones I checked)

Elementary

These materials are excellent for building basic vocabulary, in my opinion, and also in hearing how vocabulary items are pronounced.

Interactive Grammar Exercises for English as a Second Language

This site has interactive fill-in-the-blanks on a limited range of grammar topics, all with a "check" feature. British English is featured and a few of the items are a bit "forced" and artificial, but still these exercises are useful, I think.

Upper Intermed.

Useful exercises on verbs and nouns.

Additional Detail for Teachers

Wordsurfing (http://www.wordsurfing.co.uk/)

·         Contains the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online (an online version of the LDCE, updated version). It's somewhat slow to load, but has quite clear definitions and examples. Some (but not all) of the headwords are also pronounced.

·         Displays a link to a Yahoo Group which has a focus on helping students create an individualized vocabulary notebook.

·         Tests to determine one's vocabulary level. The first one gives results up to a determined vocabulary of 8,000 words; it was difficult—partly because sometimes it tested for identification of synonyms, sometimes for closely-related words.

·         Links to multiple "pages" of an "Audio Pictionary." The beginning levels focused on matching illustrations with lexical items; when selected, an item's pronunciation was heard; students then did several types of matching exercises (often ending with one like "Concentration"). The more advanced ones had a format which focused on matching with restatements or synonyms. The stress was sometimes peculiar in the pronunciations, but generally this was very useful material—and it should be noted that it included lexical items from both British and American English.

Interesting Things for ESL Students (http://www.manythings.org/)

·         Created and maintained by two ESL teachers based in Japan

·         Contains many grammar and vocabulary practice activities

·         The amount of information available could be overwhelming. Teachers will need to direct students to specific activities that reinforce classroom topics

·         Not all exercises give the user feedback on accuracy.

Isabel’s ESL Site (http://www.isabelperez.com/)

·         Created by a secondary school teacher in Spain

·         Lists exercised by learning point and difficulty. Easy-to-use practices allow students to check their accuracy as they go.

·         Displays pop culture content that would be interesting to high school age students

·         Contains some spelling mistakes and non-native speaker word order

English Quizzes for ESL Students (http://www.geocities.com/tereza_neves/)

·         The exercises are clever, bright, and fun—or seem to be: many of them didn't load when I tried to launch them.

·         The exercises are rather limited in scope, but if they all work, I think students would have a lot of fun with them.

Vocabulary topics

·         People: The Family Tree, Clothes, Out of this World, The Human Body, The Face, Occupations

·         Animals: Animals 1, Animals 2 (both fill-in), Animals Crossword Puzzle, Birds, Sea Creatures, Giant Octopus (all fill-in)

·         House and Garden: Flowers (matching), Fruits and Vegetables, In the Kitchen 1, In the Kitchen 2 (all matching), In the Bathroom 1, In the Bathroom 2, Objects 1 (all blanks), Objects 2 (matching), Objects 3 (blanks)

·         It's a Small World: Numbers (cardinal), Ordinals, Proverbs 1, Proverbs 2, Transportation (fill-in), Capitals of English-Speaking Countries (blanks), Nationalities

Grammar

·         Many of the exercises did not load. The exercises that loaded were made with Hot Potatoes.

·         Some of the exercises are timed.

·         All of the exercises have a "check" feature which indicates whether responses were correct and also gives a percentage grade.

·         Some of the exercises have a "hint" feature which provides help in determining the answer.

·         Some of the "correct" answers are actually comma-splice sentences: *"We heard the phone, we didn't hear the doorbell." (The comma after phone should be a period [full stop] or semicolon.)

Phrasal Verb Demon (http://www.phrasalverbdemon.com/)

·         Visually attractive site.

·         Pages load quickly over my DSL—not sure if slower connections would experience frustration

·         Site provides option to subscribe to a newsletter

EnglishPage.com (http://www.englishpage.com)

·         English Grammar Book lists grammar categories and connects to many other sites with exercises on those topics

·         Mini-tutorials provide 1-page explanations of typically confusing grammar points, such as Who-Whom-Whose

·         Crossword puzzles seem suitable for intermediate levels and up

Interactive Grammar Exercises for English as a Second Language (http://www.projectx2002.org/interactive_grammar.htm )

·         The site also features links to other free interactive grammar exercises.

Verb Exercises

·         Two exercises for each of these topics: spelling basic verb forms, simple present / present progressive, making negatives, question tags

·         Top 50 irregular verbs (2 exercises, each for 25 irregular verbs)

·         Narrative tenses (10 exercises, most based on readings)

·         Passive voice (11 exercises)

·         Expressing the future (2 exercises)

·         Modal auxiliaries and special constructions

o        Exercises on these topics: first, second conditional; disagreeing / agreeing; must / have to; don't have to / mustn't; past forms: modals; used to / be used to; must / have to (2); mustn't / needn't; didn't have to / needn't have; conditional: type 1, type 2, type 3, all types

Noun Exercises

·         Exercises on these topics: plural (5 exercises), genitive (3 exercises), articles (2 exercises)

English: Vocabulary Guide | Vocabulary Guide: English (http://www.languageguide.org/english/eng/ )

·         The site was fast to load and also worked very smoothly on a high-speed connection. It would be good to know how it works on a dial-up connection, though.

Six Topic Areas

·         Group I: alphabet, numbers, greetings, time, writing

·         Group II: the body, men's clothing, the body 2, women's clothing, family, fruits, vegetables
