ONLINE ACTIVITIES
Week 1
Getting to know the virtual learning environment (made with Moodle)
-Register
-Edit your profile and add your photo
-Surf around the environment and the
course Web pages, and ask all the questions that come to your mind ;-)
-Check the links to different blog providers.
Then take a look at some blogs in the area of Architecture and Urban
Planning. Decide on the blog provider of your preference.
-Write your comments on your expectations
for this course: Open a "Journal" in Moodle. As opposed to
the blogs you will create, this journal will be read only by you and
me ;-)
Week 2
Rhythm in Architecture
-Complete the vocabulary exercises for
the reading on Rhythm, in the reading guide, in the following
links:
-Complete the activities on this page
-Read the text: Rhythm
and Ritual: A Motive for Design . Use Notepad to write the
vocabulary that is unknown to you (you can use any other word processor
application). To find the NotePad or the WordPad on your computer (if
you have a PC), follow this instructions:
Start > Programs > Accessories
-Get in the Yahoo Messenger and chat
with 1 or 2 classmates about the reading, express your opinions.
-Save the chat transcript and post it
to the corresponding forum in Moodle
-Create a blog and write an entry with
your opinion about the article read.
-Go to the "Glossary" in Moodle
and write the unknown vocabulary from the reading. Write the meaning
of the word, you can also select and image from Internet (if possible),
and write the source where you found its meaning (provide the link if
it was found on the Web).
-Introduction to the
project for the Urban Planning group
Week 3
-Complete the interactive vocabulary
exercises about Acoustics. This vocabulary has been taken from
our guest speaker's presentation. Remember that you can see and print
the list of words used for each exercise.
-Copy the unknown words to the glossary
in Moodle
-Be ready to attend the talk by our
guest Cora
Chen (USA) who will be presenting about Rhythm and Acoustics in
Architecture and ask questions after the talk is over.
-Write a summary of the talk, as
well as your personal comments on your blog! To make your comments more
interesting visit the references cited by Cora in her presentation and
the sites with the newest work of Ghery (references
Web page).
-UP: keep working on your Webquest
project.
You should have your group wiki and your individual blogs. They will
be checked on a weekly basis.
Week 4
- Since we could not have
the talk with our guest speaker last week. Cora will give her presentation
this week.
-Write an entry on your blog about her
presentation
-Catch up with the assignments from weeks
2 and 3.
-The vocabulary quiz will be posted on
Monday (in Moodle, week 4) and you will have time to complete it until
Thursday (before class).
Note: this instructions are both for Architecture
and Urban Planning students.
Week 5
- Architecture students:
Go to the House
Plans part 1 Webquest:

-Follow the instructions
given on the page. This activity integrates the content covered in the
past weeks: Rhythm, Acoustics, Circulation and Space.
-Urban Planning students:
Keep working on your Project. I would like to see some progress on your
personal blogs and on your wiki (webcollaborator)
-For both groups: if you
have not taken the Vocabulary quiz 1, please do so
Week 6
- For everybody: Do the
following exercises related to the Montreal Video:
- Architecture students: Write your house plan analysis
in the Forum created in Moodle for that purpose.
- Go over the House
project (an alternative for the final project - group work for
4 members)
- Urban Planning students: Write a report on the
progress of your project in the forum created in Moodle for that purpose.
Week 7
-For Everybody: Introduction to
Bridges. Guest Speaker: Arnold
Mühren from Holland: "A literary Intermezzo". Meet
him at Alado,
participate in the discussion and be ready to take part in the activities
he has prepared in Moodle (Albert's Bridge).
-Architecture student: check
the link to All
about bridges for next class and decide which of the 2 choices for
final project you will opt for.
-Urban Planning students:
Keep working on your final project.
Week 8
Tuesday class
-For everybody: Go to
Moodle, and work on the Albert's Bridge activities.
-Architecture Students:
Read the information about bridges in the All
about bridges page. Write an entry on your blogs about what you
learned on these sites, then do the interactive exercises.
-UP students: Keep working
on your final projects
Thursday Class
Everybody: Listen to our
guest tutors, Rita Zeinstejer and Teresa Almeida d'Eça. Participate
in the discussion, and post comments to yourblogs.
-Rita has created a handout to gather information
about her presentation, and Teresa has created a PhotoStory that you
can watch before the presentation. You can find all the resources in
Moodle.
Note: Section A will only
get the recordings of these presentations after they have been delivered
to the B section. Section A students can join section B for the presentations
if possible. Both presentations will take place at Alado.
Week 9
Everybody: Listen to our
guest speakers: Barbara Chap (Germany), Susanne Nyrop (Denmark), Elisabeth
Fernandes (Japan) and Stewart Nelson (Canada). Participate in the discussion
and post comments to your blogs. The first part of Barbara's photostory
is linked to Moodle and to our references
page.
The presentations will take place
at the Elluminate room in Learning Times:

You will be asked to register (it
is free). Do it, and you will then be asked to download an application,
say yes to all, and finally you will get to the virtual room.
Week 10
Everybody:
Tuesday:
- Take the quiz on bridge
vocabulary (available in Moodle week 9)
- Work on the Albert's
Bridge assignment
- Teresa will present
the Vasco de Gama Bridge (afternoon section)
- Work on your final projects.
Should be ready next week
Thursday:
- Presentation of Albert's Bridge assignments
to Arnold
Week 11
- Final Projects to be
posted to Moodle or sent to me by e-mail, to be shown
in class (Tuesday or Thursday)
Week 12
Course Evaluation - Final Grades
- Write your comments
about the course in the forum created in Moodle
-Complete the online course evaluation
provided by the university at http://opinion.dii.usb.ve
(you need to have your USBID active, if in doubt, go to http://activacion.dst.usb.ve/
)
-If you worked in groups or pairs during
the course, evaluate your group work. Use this Group
Work Evaluation Checklist and post it to the forum created in Moodle
